Nat Turner leads a slave rebellion in Virginia. Turner was an enslaved preacher & self-proclaimed prophet led in the slaughter of 55 white men, women, & children in the deadliest slave revolt in U.S. history. It lasted until the next day when the rebels met organized resistance. Turner fled & remained free until October 1831 when he was captured. He was executed on November 11, 1831. During Turner's time in jail a local lawyer Thomas Gray took notes & published a book, The Confessions of Nat Turner which remains a source for historians. |

Nicola Sacco & Bartolomeo Vanzetti two Italian immigrants were executed via electric chair in Massachusetts. Their executions stem from a robbery & murder of two men in a shoe factory on April 15, 1920. Both were anarchists & many think were convicted on flimsy evidence & the movement at the time in the country against radicals & immigrants. |

The Erie Basin Riot when stevedores on the Buffalo waterfront heard of President Lincoln's call for 300,000 for Civil War service under the New York State Militia act. Fearing being drafted a riot started on the docks. Police were called; shots fired & tensions subsided. As it turns out NY had enough volunteers that a draft was not needed...........yet. Most of the stevedores were Irish immigrants. |

The Homestead Steel Plant near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was owned by Andrew Carnegie. The workers went on strike, Carneignie went to Scotland & left Henry Fricke in charge of operations with orders to break the strike at all costs. Fricke hired 300 Pinkerton Detectives who were armed & descended upon the steel plants in barges on the Monongohela River. They were opposed by armed steel workers & a fire fight broke out killing several on each side. The Pennsylvania militia was called out & the strike was broken. Meanwhile Carnegie stayed in Scotland, building libraries & giving speeches proclaiming the dignity of labor & the duties of wealth. |

I worked for a labor/constitutional lawyer many years ago. It was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. An inside joke among the labor secretaries was "the complement is depressed". How many Teamsters does it take to change a light bulb? Twelve. You got a problem with that? (My one and only labor union joke.) "It is forbidden to spit on cats in plague-time."

Robert Ballard found the Titanic & received much media attention. But that was a cover for his real mission which was funded by the U.S. Navy to find the sunken nuclear submarines Thresher & Scorpion. Ballard found the subs first to keep the technology from falling in Soviet hands & Titanic with just days left before his funding ran out. |
