Re:ON THIS DATE Date Posted:2026-04-07 08:48:06Copy HTML 1968
Walter Cronkite has his first meeting with The Duke of Edinburgh, in Scotland at the English-Speaking Union. He was the honorary chairman and presided at the opening banquet, introduced Cronkite, spoke without notes & delivered an excellent presentation of the importance of the Union. He followed with a list detailing what he expected from each of the meeting's committees. He announced he would meet with each of them on the following day and by the next night he expected a presentation of their findings and recommendations. Clearly the Duke knew what he was about.
Their next meeting was at Windson Castle, where The Duke was the chairman of the World Wildlife Fund. Again, he was knowledgeable on the subject of animal conservation & very charismatic to boot. Cronkite came away feeling sorry for both him & England, because he never had a chance at real leadership solely because of the traditional constraints on the British monarchy. |

Re:ON THIS DATE Date Posted:2026-04-08 07:37:13Copy HTML Very much in the mould of Prince Albert who was as involved in political and cultural life in GB as Victoria was, perhaps more so, but unheralded behind the scenes. You're playing chess with Fate and Fate's winning.

After Lee's surrender to Grant at Appomattox Courthouse, union artillery began firing celebratory rounds. Grant ordered them to stop & said, "We are all countrymen now." Some 79 years later, the grandsons of the men in that room stormed ashore at Normandy. |

Re:ON THIS DATE Date Posted:2026-04-11 07:32:04Copy HTML This would, should have been headline news every day but for the war in Iran. I admit to feeling slightly emotional as the return was played out and I didn't follow it live only an edited version hours later. You're playing chess with Fate and Fate's winning.

Thomas Nelson Jr. was a founding father of America. A man of considerable wealth, Nelson was key to forming Virginia's formidable militia, and in 1781 was elected governor. While leading militiamen during the battle of Yorktown, Nelson learned that British commander Charles Cornwallis was occupying his home and ordered his own troops to open fire and destroy it. So committed to the cause was Nelson that he cosigned a $2 million loan to help stock the French fleet to assist the Continental Army. A loan that was never repaid. |

China surpassed Japan in world-wide auto exports. In Britain China are doing to the Japs what the Japs did to us. They are undercutting them, selling vehicles cheap to win the market and offering 'offers you can't refuse' to do that. |

Harry S. Truman sworn in as POTUS. He had only been Vice President for 82 days, was unaware of the Manhattan Project, & was basically kept in the dark toward the last days of WWII. When he asked the widow Roosevelt if there was anything he could do for her. She replied that he (Truman) was the one in trouble now, & would need all the help he could get. |
