April Fool's Day. In the ancient world, New Year's Day was April 1. Pope Gregory changed it to January 1 with the Gregorian Calendar, https://www.catholic365.com/article/44586/will-the-new-year-start-on-january-1-or-april-1-the-new-year-brings-april-fools-.html . The people that continued to celebrate April 1 as New Year's Day, were called fools. This is why, April 1 is called April Fool's Day. |

Under the Julian Calendar News Year's Day was 25 March, so I don't think it has anything to do with that. And if you're wondering why 25 March it's because it's nine months before Jesus was born. GB and the British Empire was one of the last countries to accept 1 January as New Year's Day from 1753. |

Re:ON THIS DATE Date Posted:2026-04-01 09:09:35Copy HTML If you look at British and North American church registers from the years before 1752 you'll see people baptized, married or buried on 24 March in 1740 for instance were followed the next day by baptisms, marriages and burials on 25 March 1741. Queen Elizabeth I died on New Year's Eve (24 March) 1602, that is to say by our reckoning 24 March 1603. You're playing chess with Fate and Fate's winning.
