Malta, Oliver Reed, actor was filming for Gladiator. He went to a pub & encountered a group of R.N. sailors. Reed known for his drinking, challenged the group to a drinking contest. After a bar tab of over $435.00, & consuming 8 pints of beer, twelve shots of rum, & half a bottle of whiskey, Reed dropped dead of a heart attack. No mention if he won the bet. |

When I was in Guernsey, I was talking to a landlord who had Oliver Reed stay at his hotel where he did the same there and got quite aggressive and obnoxious. The following morning Reed bought his wife chocolates and flowers and couldn’t apologise enough. For a party piece on that drunken night he waged he could roll down a small flight of concrete stairs leading out of the pub. A few of his drinking buddies took him up on it and that’s exactly what he did apparently saying he was an ex stunt man. He was certainly quite a character. |

William Joyce aka "Lord Haw Haw" hanged for treason at Wandsworth. An American who moved to Ireland & then England at an early age with his family. He grew up in England & turned Fascist. Moving to Germany as war loomed, he broadcast Nazi propaganda messages via radio. He had a nasal, annoying voice with an equally annoying message. |

Joyce is the most famous, of the others John Amery, the son of Leo Amery a former Cabinet Minister in Churchill's government hanged in December 1945 is well known. The third and last is all but forgotten today - Theodore Schurch. Of Swiss descent he was captured in North Africa and deserted to the Germans. He was arrested in Rome at the end of the war, tried for treason and hanged a day after Joyce in London. You're playing chess with Fate and Fate's winning.
