Re:ON THIS DATE Date Posted:2025-06-05 12:19:03Copy HTML GB's most senior military figure to be killed in World War I; Field Marshal Horatio, 1st Earl Kitchener of Khartoum and of Broome, the Secretary of State for War died in the sinking of the cruiser HMS Hampshire off the Orkney Islands this day 1916. He was on his way to Russia at the head of a military delegation when the Hampshire struck a German mine. Of the 749 on board only 12 survived. You're playing chess with Fate and Fate's winning.

Re:ON THIS DATE Date Posted:2025-06-05 04:32:58Copy HTML It was carrying a huge amount of gold and some years ago the Brits and the Russians got together and to agree terms for the reclamation. Although it was the Brits who raised the gold it was in Russian waters so they shared it equally and the Russians certainly made sure they did |

Re:ON THIS DATE Date Posted:2025-06-05 06:05:30Copy HTML After the Revolutionary War, Americans turned their backs on all traditions associated with Britain, among them Christmas. But the popularity of Dicken's A Christmas Carol, in 1843, and a growing reconnection with European customs, saw a return of Christmas. However, December 25th did not become a federal holiday until President Grant signed it into law in 1870. |

Re:ON THIS DATE Date Posted:2025-06-05 08:54:08Copy HTML I haven't looked it up yet, but I don't think there was any gold on board. Kitchener was leading a mission to Russia to offer further aid in Russia's faltering war effort on the Eastern Front. Are you thinking of HMS Edinburgh which was sunk by a German U-boat in Russian waters in 1942, she was carrying Russian gold to GB in payment for munitions we'd sold to Russia? You're playing chess with Fate and Fate's winning.

Re:ON THIS DATE Date Posted:2025-06-06 12:45:13Copy HTML Back in my corporate days, my boss, who looked like a Ken Doll, had an umbrella, so not to mess his hair on rainy days. One day we were both leaving the office for the parking lot & he offered to share the umbrella with me. I told him.......I would rather get wet. He found me a very "manly man" after that. |

A letter tucked in a stamp collection mentioned the name of Adolph Eichman, a German living in Argentina. This was brought to the attention of Simon Wiesenthal, a holocaust survivor & famed Nazi Hunter. Eichman was found by Israel's Mossad in 1960, tried by the Supreme Court in Israel, convicted & executed by hanging in 1962. |

Unfortunately the Germans discovered them, so the Brits, put a left handed thread on them and the Germans never discovered another one. |
