The family moved out in 1920 and the estate was sold in the 1930s. With no buyer for the house it was partially demolished. A few ruins remain today. As it was - As it is -
Can you imagine how much wood or coal would have to be used just to heat a place that size. I lost count of the number of smoke stacks and chimneys it has. No wonder why Britain ran out of wood by the start of the 1900's. You're playing chess with Fate and Fate's winning.

RMS Titanic sinks, 1,496 die or was it 1,517, or maybe 1,503? Depending on which government committee findings you believe. Nobody went to jail for the disaster. Quartermaster Robert Hichens was vilified as a coward because he was at the wheel when the ship hit the iceberg & was in command of a lifeboat when he refused to save survivors in the water. Claiming he worried the lifeboat would be sucked down with Titanic. He career with White Star was ruined, he fell into depression, attempted suicide twice, & was arrested for attempted murder. He died at age 58 in 1940. |

Explorers led by Charles Howard Bury, locate mysterious footprints in the snows of the Himalayas. Sherpa guides call them "metoh-kangmi" which meant "Man Bear of the Snow." This was misinterpreted to "Filthy Snowman" & the legend of the "Abominable Snowman" was born. In 2017 DNA analysis found they were bear footprints. Imagine that. |

The poor had dirt floors in their homes. Hence the term "Dirt Poor."
The rich had slate floors in their home. They became slippery when wet so thresh was spread about to prevent slipping. At the front door there was a piece of wood on the floor to keep the thresh inside. Hence the term "Threshold."
The homes had thatched rooves with no wood under it. Animals such as cats, dogs, & others, slept on the roof to keep warm. When it rained hard sometimes, they would slide off. Hence the term "Raining cats & dogs."
In the bedroom of the thatched roof, vermin & bugs would fall on the bed creating a mess. To remedy that large poster beds with sheets stretched over them would provide protection. Hence the creation of "canopy beds." |
