They are short of males heirs, they've not gone so far as to allow female succession but they've widened the scope of just who qualifies as a member of the Imperial Family. 

One or two monarchies are looking a bit wobbly, Spain for instance, but most are safe for now. The last to fall was Nepal in 2008.  

Occasionally, a story appears in my news about the King and Queen of Spain and their lovely daughters.  They seem to be a modern royal couple doing good deeds around their country.  

They are tainted by the previous King Juan Carlos who abdicated, some say was forced to, after a series of scandals. He is officially in voluntary exile in the UAE but returns to Spain regularly. There have also been problems with his younger daughter, sister of King Felipe VI, and her husband over a corruption scandal, he was stripped of the Ducal title he was given on his marriage in 1997 in 2015.   

That sounds like interesting reading.  I recall reading For Whom the Bell Tolls and that was enough Spanish history for me at the time.  

Every monarchy has its problem relatives.  It just depends on how much their existence depends on the people.  Our political class has its problem relatives, too.
