Date Posted：2026-07-18 11:47:52 Even in recent times Monarchs across Europe have had some odd titles. Most are quite ordinary - King/Queen of Denmark or King of the Belgians for instance. But others have been far grander. From 1863 until the Monarchy was abolished in 1973 the ruler of Greece was King of the Hellenes. From 1249 until the Monarchy was abolished in 1910 the ruler of Portugal was King/Queen of Portugal and the Algarves. From 1721 until the Monarchy was abolished in 1917 the ruler of Russia was Emperor/Empress and Autocrat of all the Russias. From 1516 until the Monarchy was abolished in 1931 the ruler of Spain was King/Queen of Spain and the Indies. When the Monarchy was restored in 1975 the title was amended to King of Spain. From 1523 until 1973 the ruler of Sweden was King/Queen of the Swedes, the Goths and the Wends. Upon his accession in 1973 the current King took the plain title of King of Sweden. From 1918 until 1929 the ruler of Yugoslavia was King of the Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. In 1929 the King adopted the simpler title of King of Yugoslavia. |

Re：Reply Topic Date Posted：2026-07-18 09:40:02 I imagine some day the vast majority of king/queen titles will be done away with in favor of more common titles (like president) that sound more corporate than royal. The natives are getting more restless by the year.

Re：Reply Topic Date Posted：2026-07-20 07:48:57 They are tainted by the previous King Juan Carlos who abdicated, some say was forced to, after a series of scandals. He is officially in voluntary exile in the UAE but returns to Spain regularly. There have also been problems with his younger daughter, sister of King Felipe VI, and her husband over a corruption scandal, he was stripped of the Ducal title he was given on his marriage in 1997 in 2015. |

Re：Reply Topic Date Posted：2026-07-20 10:10:30 That sounds like interesting reading. I recall reading For Whom the Bell Tolls and that was enough Spanish history for me at the time. Every monarchy has its problem relatives. It just depends on how much their existence depends on the people. Our political class has its problem relatives, too. |
