I read every day. At the moment it's an American novel Roderick Hudson, Henry James' first success.

Let us know if you like the book or not.  I've never heard of the author, but I found a synopsis of his book.

He was an American who lived in Europe from the age of 32, finally settling in GB and gaining UK citizenship a year before he died in 1916. Most of his novels and short stories revolve around Americans in Europe, Roderick Hudson is one of them.

He can be a challenging read, twice I've started The Ambassadors and twice given up on it as it was too dense, lots of words getting me nowhere. Luckily I found a BBC dramatization from 1977 which allowed me to find out what James was going on about.

His best known novel is The Portrait of a Lady which I've not read yet. Some of his short stories are well known too, The Turn of the Screw, Daisy Miller and my favourite The Aspern Papers.

If you fancy a Halloween night movie suggestion, youtube has the full film adaptation of Turn of the Screw.  With some of those hard-to-read authors, a film adaptation is a godsend, if they do it right of course.  With other authors, it's the other way around.  Short stories are more successful in my opinion.  You have to be wary of the "based on the book" movies.  There's too much to cover.

Japan's imperial system is a tradition of pointless misogyny. Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako have one child, Princess Aiko. But she is barred from inheriting the Chrysanthemum Throne because of her gender. Japan has not had a female monarch since the 1700's, and since 1890 the law has allowed only boys from male lines to take the throne. Source The Mainichi

The term "quarantine" comes from the Italian term meaning "40 days." This refers to the "Black Death" plague when ships arrived the sailors had to stay on board for 40 days to prevent the spread of death.

The Mississippi River has to be kept on course with a series of floodgates. Otherwise, it would have changed direction 85 miles west of New Orleans which is one of the busiest ports in the USA.

B2 Spirits carried out raids yesterday using GBU 57 Bunker busters. Contrary to what you might have heard, this apparently was the first time it's been used in this war. Three targets were hit, including their most protected facilities under a granite mountain. Not all nuclear facilities have to be struck and struck precisely. The route the Iranians have taken for their own bomb includes the multi centrifuge method of enrichment. These machines spin at extraordinary speeds and to do so have to be minutely balanced. Any movement in the cathedrals of these machines can unbalance and thus destroy them. Both Israel and the US will now target the scientists involved, as Israel has done for years and they are not easily replaced.

Will it lead to genuine negotiations with Iran, not the fanciful talks that Trump has said about a dozen times are going on, yet nothing ever comes of them. Up to now they don't want a deal "so badly, so badly" as to actually sign one, despite what the Oaf-in-Chief tells us.

During WWII the siege of Leningrad lasted 872 & the city never surrendered. This must be a record for "modern" sieges. In the "olden" days there must have been longer sieges.

Some went on for years but they weren't proper sieges, more containment or blockade. The one that springs to mind is the three year seven month siege of Gibraltar by the Spanish 1779-83.
