Re：Don't start another Date Posted：2026-07-30 08:30:19Copy HTML He was an American who lived in Europe from the age of 32, finally settling in GB and gaining UK citizenship a year before he died in 1916. Most of his novels and short stories revolve around Americans in Europe, Roderick Hudson is one of them. He can be a challenging read, twice I've started The Ambassadors and twice given up on it as it was too dense, lots of words getting me nowhere. Luckily I found a BBC dramatization from 1977 which allowed me to find out what James was going on about. His best known novel is The Portrait of a Lady which I've not read yet. Some of his short stories are well known too, The Turn of the Screw, Daisy Miller and my favourite The Aspern Papers.

With some of those hard-to-read authors, a film adaptation is a godsend, if they do it right of course. With other authors, it's the other way around. Short stories are more successful in my opinion. You have to be wary of the "based on the book" movies. There's too much to cover. "It is forbidden to spit on cats in plague-time."
