Re:Don't start another Date Posted:2026-07-11 05:15:01Copy HTML It's thought that it was made in England on the orders of King William's half-brother Odo, Bishop of Bayeux in the 1070s. You're playing chess with Fate and Fate's winning.

Re:Don't start another Date Posted:2026-07-11 01:46:05Copy HTML The Bayeux Tapestry is back in England for the first time since it was made here 950 years ago after a secret night time journey. Apparently it's an embroidery rather than a tapestry; Shula, Teresa what's the difference? England & France have an interesting & tumultuous relationship in history. Friends, then enemies, then friends, then enemies again. |

Re:Don't start another Date Posted:2026-07-11 06:28:11Copy HTML After the defeat of Napoleon we were generally on good terms with one another. Having said that suspicion remained, which reached its height in the 1860s when France launched the world's first purpose-built ironclad battleship leading to an arms race 45 years before the arrival of the dreadnoughts. It also led to the construction of a series of forts along the coast and in Ireland as a defence against a French invasion. There was no invasion and never was going to be one, so the forts became known as Palmerston's Follies after the Prime Minister Viscount Palmerston who authorised their construction. There were also a few incidents in the colonies, but that was normal with the European powers. You're playing chess with Fate and Fate's winning.

Re:Don't start another Date Posted:2026-07-11 10:46:53Copy HTML According to Wikipedia, the decade of 1860-1869 was a turbulent one globally. Knowing a bit of the arguments over the centuries between England and France, it's no wonder they were snarling at one another.

Re:Don't start another Date Posted:2026-07-12 01:22:47Copy HTML It would seem that after Napoleon France was left to watch over Europe's squabbles & GB was busy worldwide building an empire. |

Re:Don't start another Date Posted:2026-07-12 05:17:54Copy HTML It had a lot to do with the Imperial ambitions of Emperor Napoleon III. Looking back it was an overreaction by GB, Napoleon was never a threat to us, in fact he and Queen Victoria were on great terms having hosted one another in the 1850s. You're playing chess with Fate and Fate's winning.

Re:Don't start another Date Posted:2026-07-12 12:37:16Copy HTML When you read a news article from a reputable source, that starts with:
"According to three sources familiar with the matter."
or
"All of whom requested anonymity"
or
"As far as we know."
What do you think? |

Re:Don't start another Date Posted:2026-07-13 07:12:39Copy HTML Theophilus Van Kannel invented the revolving door in 1888 because he didn't like holding doors open for women. Someone said that 100 years after his death in 1919, or he just thought chivalry was dead & women were capable of opening the door by themselves. I am sure some nameless Brit invented one first. Please advise. |
