Re:Don't start another Date Posted:2026-02-28 07:05:34Copy HTML One of the last surviving members of Bomber Command, pilot Colin Bell, has told how his station commander refused to ground his squadron of Mosquito fighter-bomber aircraft despite the manufacturer warning it had to fix a potential engine fault. When asked what would happen if their engines failed on take-off, the commander replied in stark terms Then you die like an officer and a gentleman. They don't make them like that anymore. No, they don't. They were aptly named The Greatest Generation. |

Re:Don't start another Date Posted:2026-02-28 07:31:03Copy HTML "The never have so many owed so much to so few" quote was for fighter command? What year during WWII was Colin Bell referring to when he got that order? Bomber command would have been bombing Germany & the situation not as urgent as the Battle of Britain, eh? |

Re:Don't start another Date Posted:2026-03-02 08:52:55Copy HTML And it’s no wonder they call it an exultation because the skylarks just hover above the field and sing their tiny little hearts out for hours. I used to have them in the field opposite me but that’s when it was just a field but for years now they’ve been farming the land and of course the skylarks just disappeared and I don’t think I have seen one anywhere for the last 20 years. |

Re:Don't start another Date Posted:2026-03-02 12:20:05Copy HTML Heard but rarely seen. They're tiny and fly so high that you can't see where the sound is coming from. I used to hear them in the summer on the way to work as I walked alongside Stafford Common.
