Date Posted:2022-12-29 05:10:13Copy HTML Don't know if you Island People get much of the American Weather reports over there but Beefalo NY took a terrible beating with a bomb snow storm. Numerous deaths because emergency crews couldn't get to strained people in their cars or homes. They are finding bodies in snow banks of people who were out walking in it. All roads had to be closed to local traffic for days until they could get them ploughed enough for emergency vehicles to get out. Even the large snow plough trucks were having to get rescued. People were running out of medicine in their homes and with the hydro out, wouldn't be able to run their gas or oil furnaces or even any electrical heating. Some people who had portable generators killed themselves for not venting them good enough and died of Carbon monoxide poisoning. Their water pipes were freezing up and most people wouldn't know that in cold weather to stop that from happening you have to keep a tap open and water flowing through the system. Tommy will correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure they got up to 4 Ft. of snow mixed with very strong winds. Question for Tommy. Did you get a chance to use your Generec power system to keep you going?

Re:BAD WEATHER. Date Posted:2025-03-03 04:01:47Copy HTML Wildfires rage across the Carolinas; South Carolina governor issues state of emergencyDozens of wildfires raged across North and South Carolina on Sunday, prompting officials to issue evacuation orders and open emergency shelters as both states and much of the Eastern Seaboard contended with dry conditions and gusty winds. The largest of the brush fires erupted Saturday in Carolina Forest, a community west of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The fire exploded in size overnight, forcing residents in at least a half dozen neighborhoods to flee their homes, officials said. By 5:30 p.m. local time Sunday, the fire grew to more than 1,600 acres and was 30% contained, according to the South Carolina Forestry Commission. Dramatic videos show the inferno nearing homes as flames whipped furiously, sending stacks of smoke into the air. Officials said no structures have been destroyed and no injuries have been reported. The South Carolina National Guard said it was assisting the South Carolina Forestry Commission and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources with wildfire containment in Horry County on Sunday. The state National Guard prepared two Blackhawk helicopters, which can carry about 600 gallons of water. In South Carolina, 175 wildfires burned across the state, scorching over 4,200 acres of land and straining firefighting resources, according to the state fire marshal's office. Response operations were ongoing in various areas, including Horry, Spartanburg, Union, Oconee, and Pickens counties. Re:BAD WEATHER. Date Posted:2025-04-17 01:28:32Copy HTML I would have loved to see snow one more time this year. We don't often see it down here. I think the Winds of Terror have moved on, at least for today. March winds bring April showers. It's best not to plant flowers here before the 24th of May. Re:BAD WEATHER. Date Posted:2025-05-09 11:08:47Copy HTML I feel like I'm living in London. Rain all day today. On a brighter note, I see our Princess Kate has a rose name for her -- Catherine's Rose. It is a beautiful coral pink flower designed to show the healing power of nature. I love it.

Re:BAD WEATHER. Date Posted:2025-05-09 11:47:50Copy HTML As a connoisseur of antiques Tommy I can report that yesterday I went to the Spode Pottery Museum in Stoke. The pottery closed in 2008 but the museum remains plus a shop selling off what's left of the Spode collection. I bought a plate from c.1820, slightly worn for £10 and a coffee cup and saucer from c.1800, a chip in the cup, for £5. Incredible prices for items over 200 years old. Lots of superb china dating from the 1830s to 1890s for less than £50 each in perfect condition. You're playing chess with Fate and Fate's winning.

Re:BAD WEATHER. Date Posted:2025-05-09 11:55:41Copy HTML You have piqued my interest as I have never seen any Spode pottery. I did look up their maker's mark in my book. Pottery & glass have taken a price beating over here since I began buying junk & selling antiques many years ago. |

Re:BAD WEATHER. Date Posted:2025-05-09 12:24:08Copy HTML I'm thinking of going back for more stuff in better condition this time. Having said that the 1800 saucer is in perfect condition and only £5 with a chipped cup. The plate has a little wear on the decoration around the edges through constant handling I guess, nice to see it was actually used once. Does this make me a conner-sewer of antiques? Re:BAD WEATHER. Date Posted:2025-05-09 02:01:07Copy HTML I counted on you exploring, Mark. I just visited the museum site and am wondering what the pattern is on your cup and saucer. I'm still looking for a "Royal Doulton with hand-painted periwinkles" piece. "It is forbidden to spit on cats in plague-time."

Re:BAD WEATHER. Date Posted:2025-05-27 09:19:00Copy HTML It is a miserable weather day in Virginia. I went out early to run errands in order to avoid the early afternoon rain. Evidently, Mother Nature doesn't like it when I try to circumvent her. It started raining early, it's cold, and tomorrow's forecast is even worse -- rain all day into late evening and the temperature never going above 56F. This merry, merry month of May doesn't feel very merry. As if things were bad enough, the trash bin took rain (they leave the lid open after collection, which they did while I was out) and emptying it was a pain in my kazoo. Re:BAD WEATHER. Date Posted:2025-06-01 05:41:12Copy HTML And on the subject of china, back in the late seventies me and the missus used to go to Warrington market every week to the china stall and buy one or two pieces of a set until we had the lot, cups saucers, teapot, sugar bowl, tureens, plates, even a cake stand, well you get the picture. We’ve used it four times in that time and everytime it was Christmas. We told our daughter she would end up with it and she said she didn’t want it. Bit of a shock that but she sees it as old fashioned. I said she was going to get it wether she liked it or not. Times change eh? |

Re:BAD WEATHER. Date Posted:2025-06-09 12:40:18Copy HTML Every now and again you run into a young person who at least appreciates the beauty/quality of antiques, but rarely do they want to be the caretakers. In this ever-changing world, culturally as well as logistically, who can blame them? A good old-fashioned egg basket would come in handy. though; modern refrigerators don't come with egg shelves anymore and egg cartons are so tacky. Rain again today and tonight. Re:BAD WEATHER. Date Posted:2025-06-09 08:41:10Copy HTML Please let us know what you select and include the pattern. I have two British-made china pieces, both miniatures. One is a miniature teapot in the daffodil pattern made by the Bristol China Co. and the other is what I think is an ashtray made by Hammersley & Co. They aren't antiques but they are treasures.

Re:BAD WEATHER. Date Posted:2025-06-10 05:55:39Copy HTML Although bought at the Spode shop the cup and saucer were Royal Crown Derby. I contacted RCD who said it dates from 1820-25 and was a common pattern with no specific name. I also bought a plate with no maker's mark, just because it looked nice which was also dated on the label as 1820s, but without any marks it's impossible to be sure. Both cost me just £15.
