FDR signs Executive Order 9066 which orders the internment of 112,000 Japanese/Americans to 10 camps. Mostly from the West Coast of the U.S. & thought to be sympathetic to Japanese interests.

I think she was and is the problem, the stumbling block. She’s a domineering, manipulative and selfish person and was already upsetting the royal apple cart from day one.

I agree as well.  I've even seen a couple of articles claiming Meghan is "re-parenting Harry".  What a thing to claim about a Prince of England.  I think there may be something much deeper going on than a simple reconciliation between father and son.  I think it's possible that Harry is beginning to get a hint as to what Meghan is up to.  A recent article pointed out that she is starting to introduce the children into her television show.  I don't watch it so I don't know if that is true or not, but it would grate deeply on Harry if he thinks there is any chance of them being used for commercial purposes.  I think he is that good of a dad.

I agree with you, Mark, that Harry and Meghan could have been a great asset to the Monarchy.  It's an opportunity that will not come around again.  If Meghan can't run the Monarchy, she will never cooperate.

February 1963 Slyvia Plath, poet, died by suicide in her London home after struggling with depression for years. She was 30 years old, stuck her head in the oven & died of asphyxiation. Anyone her read any of her works?

1840's Benjamin Bradley, a slave from Maryland, studied mechanical engineering & designed an engine powerful enough to propel warships. Federal law prevented him from patenting his own invention, so he sold it to a naval officer & with the proceeds Bradley bought his freedom.

I did but it was so long ago I've forgotten.  I think it was about the time I also read/listened to Leonard Cohen who was depressing enough.  His line "That's not the electric light, my friend, that is your vision growing dim." left it's mark.

She mostly wrote poetry which is one genre of literature I've never got into. Her one big novel was The Bell Jar, not read that either.

At the moment I'm reading I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith, a pretty good humorous story so far just a quarter of the way in.

It should be made compulsory reading for US students. I’ve asked the question before, will the US see their collective likes again?

One nights the Japs were infiltrating Marine positions on Peleliu. During the mayhem, a Marine was shot & killed by a fellow Marine. We would call that friendly fire today. Afterwards the author E.B. Sledge "Sledgehammer" was being interviewed by the captain. "Tell me exactly what you saw" "I saw two Japs sneak by & sounded the alert, then a scuffle occurred in the dark" "Did you see who killed Bill? "Yes." Then he told me it had been a tragic mistake that anyone could have made & not to discuss it or mention the man's name. He then dismissed me. The captain was Andrew "Ack Ack" Haldane. He was beloved by his Marines & was KIA the next week. Source the book With The Old Breed

If I may inject a touch of humo(u)r, Tom, do you remember the TV show "Sledgehammer" from the late 80's?  "Trust me.  I know what I'm doing."  Hadn't thought of this show in ages.

I'm not comfortable with this endless fawning over the great oaf, but I suppose it has to be done with such a capricious character. Rather like a child he's dazzled by pageantry and colour, he'll get plenty of that even though the weather looks bad.

It was the Duchess of Kent's funeral yesterday. Her widower the Duke, who is 90 next month, is looking very frail. Also a very touching photo of the Princess of Wales.

I've asked this before but forgotten the answer. If Washington wasn't elected until 1789 who was Head of State/President from 1776 to 1789?

Before the US Constitution was approved, the US was under the Articles of Confederation,

I've only heard of two of those, I suspect the others are equally anonymous to most Americans too.
