James Barry celebrated British military surgeon dies. Upon preparing his body for the funeral it was discovered "he" was a woman & even had stretch marks indicating that she had given birth at one time. It is surmised the reason she masqueraded as a man for 50 years was to pursue a medical degree which was unavailable for women at that time. |

When he was 60 King Ludwig fell under the spell of Lola Montez, the exotic dancer (in reality an Irish woman 26 year old Eliza Gilbert) whom he created Countess von Landsfeld. There's a monument at the site listing the 71 dead. Had the blast occurred above ground it the death toll would have been in the hundreds. It was picked up on seismographs on mainland Europe as an earthquake.

I'll drink to that. No children at all it seems. After Ludwig's abdication she fled to London and married an army officer. It didn't last and she spent four years in the USA as an "exotic dancer" where she married a newspaper reporter in California. That didn't last either, so she spent a year on tour in Australia before returning to the USA where she died in 1861 aged 39. She is buried in Brooklyn NYC. |

This is interesting. I am so glad, to see trees and grass in that area. |
