The longer this goes on, the more I see Ukraine as being just another cold war ball for each side to kick around. The initial attack on the Russian economy by the west has just about run its course and now the Rouble has recovered, China, India and most of the rich middle eastern states still back Russia and Putin and he has never been so popular with his own people. I see talk of him being ousted as a matter of course but I'm beginning to doubt that very much, as he has an iron grip on all of the Russian institutions of state and security. Any war of attrition, which this is turning into, will always favour Russia, with its massive resources and with the west declining to go any further than it has, I can't see it going but one way. The west might close its Moscow McDonalds and a few other tokenisms but the fact is, Russia has Europe by the goolies, as we have been idiotic enough to become dependent of Russian energy, which will always be our Achilles heel. We are stuck on the Russian tit. Here in Europe a few years ago the ruling classes in Brussels issued a diktat stating that diesel engines were cleaner than petrol ones, a blatant pile of crap if ever there was one. Any person with an inkling of knowledge of engines knew this was a blatant lie and who benefitted most from it? The German car industry. Here in Britain, following our decades long policy of getting everything produced abroad, we gave up refining our own fuels on a huge scale and guess who refines all of our Diesel? Yep, Russia. There is now talk of Diesel rationing later in the year and if that happens where will our shops get their goods from? Russia holds all the cards, as far as I can see. Gas and electricity are now set to rise by up to 400% in Britain in the next two years and our political class have only added to the crisis by pampering to the ridiculous green lobby. Naturally they're having to quietly backtrack now as their own political futures are in jeopardy. Do you know that 25% of all we pay over here for energy is a green tax? If the war has any benefit for us, it will be the dawning of an energy reality in the corridors of power.

Russian Reservists, I'm sure you and your compadres were at the peak of fighting fitness, should you have been called upon to serve.
I read yesterday that pretty well every man in Russia is a Reservist, most of whom bear no resemblance to an actual fighting force. Most I suspect are backroom staff with no real military experience.

The USS Ward was on patrol outside of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 when she engaged and sunk a Jap mini-submarine which was attempting to enter Pearl Harbor. This was just before the Jap aerial attack on the U.S. fleet inside Pearl Harbor. USS Ward, manned by naval reservists from Minnesota scored the first American victory over Jap forces in the Pacific.

Yes via Kamikaze hit. Ward was a WWI vintage destroyer which went thru several upgrades during her service.

This is a picture somewhere showing a group of veterans standing around I think it must be part of the original Ward somewhere that shows the boats it has sunk and included the mini sub on it. Maybe Tommy can find it.

I have never seen that one, Pete. When the skipper of Ward reported the sinking of the sub after a shell hit on the conning tower, the kill was disputed because it could not be confirmed. Well years later the sub was located, raised & sure enough there was the shell hole in her con. I do remember a picture of one of the old salts who was on Ward present at that time, smiling with that long overdue I told you so look.

Another prominent Russian dies, this time after falling down several flights of stairsA top aviation scientist is the latest prominent Russian to die under suspicious circumstances, apparently suffering a fall “from a great height” at a building under construction. Anatoly Gerashchenko, the former head of the Moscow Aviation Institute, an engineering school in the capital, died earlier this week at the school, multiple news outlets, both in Russia and internationally, reported. While information remains limited about the specifics of his death, Izvestia, a Russian news website, reported that he “fell from a great height, flying (down) several flights of stairs,” according to a translation of the article. Medics, Izvestia reported, arrived on scene and pronounced Gerashchenko dead. Moskovskij Komsomolets, a Russian newspaper, said that Gerashchenko had been visiting the school to supervise construction of a new building, when he lost his footing on the third floor. “Unfortunately, the workers did not have time to install the railings — they were temporarily replaced by fencing tape,” the article said . “Most likely, Gerashchenko did not see the boundaries of the stairs and stumbled. The elderly adviser could hardly see with his right eye.” Now if you believe all that crap, I have some dry land in Florida for sale. What is fencing tape. Who builds a fence out of tape like this.

Tucker Carlson’s programme last night touched upon the sabotage of the Nordstream pipeline. It was blown up and it’s presently pouring methane gas by the ton into the atmosphere. So who did it? Well certainly not
Russia, as they only need to press a button to turn it off and sabotaging your own pipeline is shooting yourself in the foot. There is one man however who publicly stated to the world that he would take out the pipeline if Russia invaded Ukraine and that man is Biden. When asked how would he do that he replied believe me, we can do it. That Newland woman at the state dept, the one who engineered a coup in Ukraine, also publicly stated that ‘one way or another the pipeline would not move forward.’ Watch it, it’s frightening and if it had been Trump in the crosshairs, what do you think the level of hysteria would be right now?

Now Russia's allies are beginning to despair over the performance of the Russian army in this war as no sooner has Putin declared Lyman Russian territory than the Ukraine forces kick them out. Apparently Putin has called for dialogue and Zelensky has refused.

Russian men are fleeing the country to avoid the draft & even going so far as breaking their limbs to avoid it. Google reported a surge in searches for "how to break an arm at home." But there is good news for them in Canada. the requirement for visitors to be fully vaccinated against Covid has been lifted & Canada has always welcomed draft dodgers.

I'm beginning to get the feeling that this war is entering its final stage. The Russian forces are in chaos, 60,000 reputed deaths and retreating on most fronts. Morale is rock bottom and there are reports of the soldiers killing their officers and if that fact is correct, it really does signal the end.

It sure does make sense Putin did it because it's a way of him saying Europe is cut off natural gas for life. I told you he's a sick puppy and can't think any further than the end of his own nose.

Good. This is where you're discussing the Russian pipeline. I really can't see Putin doing the blowing up. I agree that he would have more likely just shut off the valve.

He says he did it to encourage us to buy electric cars. Have you seen the horror in Florida where the electric cars are catching fire? The article I read indicated that the electric car batteries get wet and ignite. The complication arises when firemen are called from other situations to put out the fires which apparently takes a long time.

Over here there are many stories of electric charging points either not working or a queue to use one. Imagine the problems in winter when a car will need charging more often what with the heating, lights etc on.
I see that the bridge linking Russia to Crimea is on fire, the Russians say it's a train fire, they'll not want to make it known to the public that it was (probably) a Ukrainian attack on Putin's birthday too.

Russia has fallen back on its only defence - fake news.
The Russians have been carrying out these kinds of atrocities in Chechnya and Syria for years, but with those victims not being quite as European as the Ukrainians we've turned a blind eye.
Fake News, so when did Fox News and the Republicans set up a station in Russia?
