Does GB support members of the Commonwealth with some sort of financial stipends? If so does offering them Republic status somehow lessen the financial burden to GB? |

President Nixon refuses to release tapes concerning the Watergate investigation. There are many historical people who died of mouth related cancer and amongst the general population it must have been tens of thousands, the cause being of course, smoking pipes and cigars. Another famous soldier to suffer the same fate was John Chard VC, officer in command of Rorke's Drift. |

I bought 5 cigars from a British source and they were horrendous, made from dried camel shit and old rope. You've just reminded me though so I'm going to go and check if they're doing business with the mother country again. I'll keep you posted. |

First Battle of Aboukir. Napoleon's last victory in Egypt against the Ottoman Turks & the British fleet. Marshal Joachim Murat of the French cavalry played a major part in the French victory with some brilliant flanking moves. The British fleet commanded by Sir Sydney Smith was unable to support the Turks because of the shallow water. The Turks were sucked in by British diplomacy to declare war on France & suffered the consequences with a devastating defeat on this date. |

Troy Leon Gregg was a convicted double murderer in Georgia & was sentenced to death. He was the first condemned individual whose death sentence was upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court. He & 3 others broke out of a Georgia prison death row & escaped. Prison authorities were unaware of the escape for several hours until Gregg called a local newspaper to brag about the deed. Gregg's freedom was short lived when he was beaten to death the next day by a biker gang. Seems as if the gang took offense when Gregg assaulted a waitress at a biker bar in North Carolina. The other 3 escapees were captured within 3 days. |

Re:On this date Date Posted:2022-07-25 05:49:41Copy HTML He was the first condemned individual whose death sentence was upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court. So he presumably appealed (who wouldn't) and lost. Before that what was the appeal procedure? Over here there was no formal Court of Criminal Appeal until 1907, before that appeals were made to the Secretary of State for Home Affairs or to the obscure Court for Crown Cases Reserved that chose itself which cases to hear and only made judgements on matters of law. You're playing chess with Fate and Fate's winning.

Over here there was no formal Court of Criminal Appeal until 1907, before that appeals were made to the Secretary of State for Home Affairs or to the obscure Court for Crown Cases Reserved that chose itself which cases to hear and only made judgements on matters of law. He would go through the state courts first & then to the U.S. Supreme Court. Another route could have been clemency granted by the state governor. All failed & in this particular case he was hitch hiking & two people in a car were nice enough to stop & give him a ride. He murdered both of them & had a long history of criminal activity. |
