Re:On this date Date Posted:2022-06-01 02:13:48Copy HTML She's all part of the checks and balances of our system. The Queen is an independent, there to advise, cajole, inform and interpret. She holds hidden power, or as the French say, no people but the British would give so much power to somebody who has none. Remember, the armed forces do not pledge allegiance to politicians, they pledge it to the Queen, she is head of the armed forces. It's a strange system but its has worked for centuries. |

Re:On this date Date Posted:2022-06-01 05:39:33Copy HTML Her actual 70th anniversary was back in February, but the Jubilee is always held in the first week of June. I didn't think this one would arose as much enthusiasm as the others, but it looks like turning out to be the most celebrated since her Silver Jubilee in 1977, partly I think because it'll be her last and most probably the last we'll ever see as we're set for a series of middle aged/old Monarchs ascending the Throne in the future. You're playing chess with Fate and Fate's winning.

Re:On this date Date Posted:2022-06-01 10:08:35Copy HTML Seventy Years
This week is Queen Elizabeth's 70th year on the throne. That is a long time & I cannot remember another ruler. Although most Americans just don't "get" the monarchy thingy, she has worn the crown & carried the burden well. She has seen a lot of Presidents come and go. I think the only one that had less than 5 minutes with her is Trump. She's a stickler for promptness and Trump showed up late which set her off. |

I had my doubts about this one what with the economic crisis and Ukraine, but it's turned out to be a magnificent start to the four day celebrations, nice weather too. A chance to say goodbye to the depression of the covid years and two fingers to Putin's Russia which seems to think we're on the verge of cannibalism due to the cost of living emergency.

The Queen was on the balcony at Buckingham Palace with a cane replacing her formerly ever-present purse. The old guy standing next to her The Duke of Kent looked like death warmed over. He looked like he was struggling for breath. How is he related to the Queen? |

Re:On this date Date Posted:2022-06-03 07:49:50Copy HTML He's the Queen's cousin, Edward, Duke of Kent. His father was George, Duke of Kent, George VI's younger brother, he was killed in an air crash on active service in 1942, so his six year old son became Duke of Kent. He has always been a rather gawky looking man (see below) and at 86 it must be difficult to get into and wear all day a uniform like the one we saw yesterday. Of all the Royals he's the one I've seen up the closest, he visited RAF Stafford in 1997 and I was among the assembled crowd as he came into the building. You're playing chess with Fate and Fate's winning.

Sam Houston of Texas fame was suffering much pain from his old war wounds. His dutiful wife Margaret send him off to Sour Lake to bathe in the mud flats there which were said to have therapeutic value. It did not help Houston so he returned home & died shortly thereafter. Sour Lake is close to Beaumont Texas & it was there in 1903 that a massive oil strike occurred. The proceeds from this strike was the beginning of the oil giant Texaco. |

My mother said to her, because they wouldn't let me be Queen. Of course the next day she had to tell her teacher that at school. Gave them all a laugh. That niece is now in her mid-50's and still gets teased over it. The same niece was watching TV when she was young and the news announcer said that a group of Guerrillas where holding people hostage. She turned to the adults in the room and says, that's stupid, who would ever let a group of gorillas hold them hostage. I think her mother wet herself after that. |

It dates from 1758 replacing the original church from the 1140s that collapsed in 1749. Newsweek has an article which places doubt on the future of the monarchy in GB. Next in line would be Charles who would be pushing 80 & kind of a dullard. After him would be William who is young & kind of progressive. The question lies with the age of Britons much like the Brexit did. The older generations are in favor of the monarchy, they younger are "what the hell is the use of it?" |

The Africans didn't even have the wheel, lived in grass huts, & drank the blood of cattle. The 1140s church, of which nothing remains above ground, was about 100 yards away; a house was built on the site whose cellar is the former undercroft of the church, the owner has many pieces of Mediaeval masonry in his garden. He opens his cellar once a year to visitors, the same day as the Open Day at the church, the first Saturday in October. As for the future of the Monarchy, you're right about the attitudes of the young as apposed to the old; but there's no sign of a desire to abolish it. Public opinion may slump a little under Charles, but it'll never fall to a point in which a referendum will even be considered. No major political party will ever campaign for a vote as they'll be shunned at the polls, even the SNP in Scotland won't commit to a referendum, much as the leadership would like to, as any move to do so will lose them thousands of votes. |
