In 1974 a Chinese farmer accidentally uncovers one of the greatest archeological jewels in all history, the Chinese terracotta army, 8,000 terracotta soldiers to guard the Emperor Shi Huang (259 BC) and every single one has a different face.

5 April 1722 - Jacob Roggeveen "discovered" Easter Island. 300 years ago today.

A Dutch expedition led by Roggeveen crossed the Pacific from east to west in three ships in search of lands and islands reported by earlier European expeditions to the Pacific. His first discovery, on Easter Sunday 1722, was an island he named Paasch Eyland (Easter Island). He reported there to be 2000-3000 inhabitants and, most notably, the hundreds of huge statues all over the island. He stayed for a week during which time a fight broke out between the two groups and around a dozen islanders were killed.

It was not visited by Europeans again until 1770 when it was claimed by the Spanish, by that time the population, which had been in decline for decades, numbered less than 1000 with obvious signs of a population in crisis.

Thanks for clearing up that "pm" thing for me, Mark.  I had never even noticed it before.  Joining a new site is interesting.

More excavating is taking place on Easter Island or was that a hoax story I read?

Can't find much about current excavations on the internet beyond archaeological tours which take place all the time.

Time flies.  I read that story in 2017 apparently.  The stone heads are in fact full statues, per the Easter Island Statue Project in Forbes magazine.

I seem to remember the population committed self genocide by total deforestation of the island in order to build the statues.

In the article from 2017 it said that the population had been reduced to half.  That is such a shame.

More than half it seems, it was thought to have numbered over 10,000 in the 17th century.

7 April 1922 - The first mid air collision between commercial aircraft. 100 years ago today.

Military aircraft and aeroplanes at air shows had collided in the air several times since the first incident in 1910. But the first between commercial aircraft with fare paying passengers occurred over northern France in 1922.

A Farman F-60 of the French airline CGEA took off from Le Bourget heading for Croydon, England. On board were two crew and three passengers including an American couple on honeymoon. The other aircraft a de Havilland DH-18A of Daimler Hire Ltd carrying mail was flying the reverse route with two crew on board.

They collided in fog at about 500 feet over the village of Thieuloy-Saint-Antoine. The DH-18A plunged to the ground immediately while the pilot of the F-60 attempted to maintain control of his aircraft, but to no avail, it crashed a few miles away. All seven on board the two aircraft were killed.

That was not a good start for commercial flying, but evidently everyone got over it because the sky sure is crowded now.

8 April 1922 - Gen. Erich von Falkenhayn died. 100 years ago today.

Prominent figure in the German Army during World War I.

Minister for War 1913-15 and Chief of the General Staff from September 1914 until he was removed in 1916 following the failure to capture Verdun. Thereafter he headed the war against Roumania with considerable success, but his transfer to assist the Turks in Palestine and Mesopotamia ended in failure. He saw out the war in relative obscurity on the Lithuanian Front.

A quick curiosity search informed me that Gen. von Falkenhayne was the uncle of Gen. Fedor von Bock who invaded Russia in 1941.  A proud military family it appears to me.

Indeed you are right, Mark.  I think it sad what Hitler did to the image of the German/Prussian military elite.  Hitler had none of the  features common to the generals; i.e., strong jaw line, steely eyes, etc.  There must have been some resentment among them at the beginning of his rise to power.  He was not in their image at all, even in uniform.

10 April 1922 - The Genoa Conference opened. 100 years ago today.

The brainchild of the British Prime Minister David Lloyd George it involved 34 European nations and British colonies with the aim of addressing the post war economic situation in Europe and tackle the pariah status of Germany and Russia. It was the first international gathering which Communist Russia attended.

It was notable in that it tackled reconstruction rather than reparation.

It's Shula's birthday today, the year I can hazard a guess at, but won't in case I'm wrong.

As you know my first love is Royalty through the ages. While there are a lot of Royal deaths on this day and other events such as coronations etc, I can only find two birthdays of reigning Monarchs from years gone by.

11 April 1357 - John I, King of Portugal 1385-1433, born.

The first King of the House of Aviz. With the death of King Fernando I in 1383 the male line of the Kings of Portugal died out. A two year civil war followed between the supporters of Fernando's daughter Beatriz and John, Fernando's illegitimate half-brother. John emerged victorious and was proclaimed King in 1385. His long reign was one of growth and expansion for Portugal with the discovery and settling of the Atlantic islands of Madeira and the Azores. He also signed an alliance with England in 1386, it remains the longest surviving alliance in the world.

11 April 1370 - Friedrich I, Elector of Saxony 1423-28, born.

Margrave of Meissen from 1407, he was the Emperor Sigismund's principal supporter in his war against the Hussites. He was rewarded with the Electoral title in 1423 following the death of the last Elector of Saxony-Wittenberg and the extinction of that line.

Thank you, Mark and Major.  It was a lovely day with temperatures nearing 70F.  As has happened the last few years, one of my tulips bloomed just for me.  Last year it was a brilliant red one; this year it was a black one -- make that a Black one.  I took well-wishing phone calls and stole three glorious hours for myself.

13 April 1922 - Sir Ross Macpherson Smith died. 100 years ago today.

An Australian, who after serving in the Australian Flying Corps in the First World War, was one of the four crew on board a Vickers Vimy that in November/December 1919 became the first to fly from England to Australia. The 11,123 mile journey took 28 days with a total flying time of 136 hours. The four men, pilots Ross and his elder brother Keith and mechanics Walter Shiers and James Bennett, shared a $A10,000 prize, the Smith brothers were also knighted.

Sir Ross became a test pilot in England and was killed in April 1922, along with his 1919 record-breaking companion James Bennett, when their Vickers Viking seaplane crashed at Byfleet.

14 April 1922 - The Dublin Courts Siege. 100 years ago today.

Three months after the Irish Free State was established the infant Ireland was hopelessly divided and heading towards civil war. On 14 April around 200 IRA Anti-Treaty militants stormed the Four Courts in central Dublin quickly taking over the entire complex, the seat of justice in Ireland.

The aim of the occupiers was to provoke the British into action, for thousands of British troops remained in Dublin awaiting redeployment to England. Reasoning that the British would not stand by and allow a prolonged occupation of the Four Courts the IRA hoped that when British soldiers were seen on the streets of Dublin (as they had been in the Easter Rising six years previously) support for the Anglo-Irish Treaty and the Dominion of the Irish Free State would collapse, allowing the IRA to gain control and unite Ireland by force.

Initially however they were outwitted by the Provisional Government of Michael Collins who did nothing preferring to wait for two months until the Irish General Election in mid June.
