In the next few days the Stone of Scone will be transported from Edinburgh Castle to Westminster Abbey for King Charles' coronation.

Putting aside the question of whether it should be moved at all the debate is also about what exactly is the lump of sandstone that carries such history. It is so named because Scottish Monarchs were crowned at Scone Abbey (pronounced scoon).

According to legend it's the pillow upon which Jacob rested his head, that's clearly a fable. More likely the stone was quarried in Scotland itself and used as a seat for the coronation of the ancient Scots Kings. It was supposedly removed from Scotland by Edward I of England in 1296 and placed underneath the Coronation Chair in Westminster Abbey to symbolise England's suzerainty over Scotland. However many believe that the stone he carried away was fake and that the real Stone of Destiny remains hidden away in Scotland. 

Also in 1950 Scottish students broke into the Abbey and stole it, it was recovered the following year but again some say that too was a fake and since 1950 the stone has been secreted in a secret location north of the border.

In 1996 it was returned to Scotland permanently and is displayed in Edinburgh Castle with the proviso that it will be loaned to England for the Coronation of all future Monarchs. 

Whatever it is it's significance far outweighs the reality of the origins of the block of sandstone.

Being a Royalist myself I was more than a bit shocked to hear that a poll on dropping the Royals was taken in Canada and over 60% voted to drop them. There still will be special event held that day but not the same as when his mother came to the throne. His picture will still be put on our money but even that is being talked about being dropped. I think that there are two things that have changed Canadians mind. For one he doesn't live up to his mother's standards and secondly, the vast majority of Canada is not just made up of people with British heritage anymore. I'm pretty sure Australia is leaning the same way according to the news. Things it is said, may have been different if Charles had let himself be passed over and put his first son on the throne instead. He would be better suited for the average age of Britain's people now.

It's heading that way, the idea of a Head of State who doesn't live in your country and visits every few years is a trifle anachronistic. 

I love the pomp and pageantry.  I love Princess Anne's role in the coronation. Prince George in the procession is noteworthy.  Pish and Posh to the naysayers.

The Coronation Throne is a strikingly simple, rather plain wooden structure dating from 1300. It was once highly decorated and gilded but has lost much of its grandeur. It was also damaged in a Suffragette bomb attack in 1914.

The most striking observation though is the extent of the graffiti carved into it centuries ago. One states "P, Abbott slept in this chair 5-6 July 1800".

The Stone of Scone will be placed in the cavity directly beneath the seat for the Coronation.

The big worry over the Coronation is the treat of an attack, either a deadly one from Islamists or troublesome disruption from eco-nutters and anti-Monarchists. I hope the loyal crowd will prevent anything too serious from the latter by turning on them and battering them to death  handing them over to the police.

Not that I know of, there have been accidents with people killed though. Only in recent times has it become fashionable to make public protest, years ago you would have been imprisoned for a long time or killed on the spot.
