Re:Don't Start Another Date Posted:2025-12-11 03:57:19Copy HTML Very true. The word soccer is rarely used these days, it's something you pesky Yanks call football to distinguish it from your version of football which isn't football at all just rugby with more padding. You're playing chess with Fate and Fate's winning.

Re:Don't Start Another Date Posted:2025-12-12 03:36:56Copy HTML Barfly talk at the Legion. Who was the greatest general ever? Their pick was Patton of course. My choice was different. You Limey's have a lot of experience in wars. You must have some better. |

Re:Don't Start Another Date Posted:2025-12-12 07:14:18Copy HTML It's an impossible question to answer, factoring in times, distances and odds. I think you just have to start off country by country, empire by empire, pick their best and whittle it down to about twenty who would always give you a good argument. I think we have more than most because we've had more successful wars than most, in more places than most against more enemies than most and losing generals don't make the top twenty. I'm always amused by how many times Napoleon is found at the top, whereas he wouldn't make my top 10. Patton? He was a good tactical general but I doubt would have made a good strategic general, a fact I think I've mentioned before and to hit the top spots you have to be brilliant at both. |

Re:Don't Start Another Date Posted:2025-12-13 11:47:35Copy HTML Good news reported on King Charles' health. In addition, reports are that Harry Markle's security may be re-instated. Does this mean an olive branch has been extended? Will the happy family be re-united? |

Re:Don't Start Another Date Posted:2025-12-13 12:33:10Copy HTML Certainly great news about the King, reports of his demise are seriously exaggerated. Nothing official yet about Prince Harry, but things are looking more hopeful for the new year. You're playing chess with Fate and Fate's winning.

Re:Don't Start Another Date Posted:2025-12-13 04:36:59Copy HTML My choice was Napoleon. As I have probably mentioned in the past, Napoleon lost the big ones the ones that define a great general (Russia and Waterloo) and a leader who makes a habit of abandoning his men is no leader to me. Her deserted them in Africa and he deserted them in Russia. His death toll, both civilian and wartime, add up to over three million. Wellington hung soldiers who looted or raped or murdered women, Napoleon considered it the spoils of war. He had no empathy or consideration for his foreign troops, who he sacrificed without the slightest conscience. He had prisoners of war executed in their thousands, despite his word he wouldn't. In two of his famous winning battles he was saved by individual action from his other generals on the field, where under his command they might have lost but he takes the credit. |

Re:Don't Start Another Date Posted:2025-12-13 06:20:29Copy HTML To paraphrase some Brit military guy who chastised Winston Churchill for taking unnecessary chances during the Boer War. The leader belongs at the top of the mountain directing the troops in the valley below. Or something like that. |

Re:Don't Start Another Date Posted:2025-12-14 08:28:57Copy HTML Dick Van Dyke turned 100 yesterday, it's impossible not to like Dick Van Dyke. A British comedian from years ago died recently aged 99, Stanley Baxter. He was a big name in the 70s and 80s. Most people, including me, thought he died years ago. You're playing chess with Fate and Fate's winning.
