Origin of XXX on poison bottles. Goes back to the Apalachin moonshiners who placed the triple X on their bottles of "mountain dew" to denote the product was strained 3 times. That morphed into the poison identification.

Seems like an obvious idea now but it was new, it was innovative and it obviously worked.

Intersting. I see today that the woman who ignored the police stand off in the recent school massacre of children and entered the building to save her own kids, now says she's being intimidated by the police for her public condemnation of their cowardice. Apparently the police are parking on her driveway and shining their lights into her living room window at night.

The alarm bells have been ringing for the past three decades. After five centuries of growing self-confidence & prosperity across the West, built on norms & values of liberty & law, & then came the Industrial Revolution. Now we seem to be lost in some kind of a dream world. This has happened in history before of course. In Rome, Egypt, & other great empires of the past, success led to complacency, then decadence, then the inability to notice the danger until it was too late. We have become vain & self-obsessed with more focus on rights rather than responsibilities. While Xi Jinping was resetting the world order through his Belt & Road Initiative & Vlad Putin was recreating the Russian empire by annexing Georgia & Crimea, we were arguing over gender-neutral toilets.

I agree entirely. For all the grumblings about poverty the average Westerner is better off than their parents and grandparents were. When there are no more battles left to fight on the economic front the Left go for increasingly absurd social and moral battles - gender identity being the current one which has superseded racism, if only temporarily.

Wow Tommy, it seems like you are trying your best to step into the 21 century where the world has moved on but most of  American isn't even trying. The hardest thing for America to grasp is change and I have said here many times that Americans can only take it in small doses at a time. If your founding fathers were living today, what do you thing they would change differently from 1787? Would they look at the rest of the world first to see how it has changed and see how other countries worked and go from there or would they make laws that were different from everyone elses.

Our laws are taken from Old English Law, Pete. We copied most & improved them to our liking. At the time Benjamin Franklin was credited with the quote; "We have a Republic, now see if we can keep it." It would seem like it is falling apart these days eh?

The falling apart Tommy I see is mainly self induced by a people who can't handle stress or even short term inconveniences without striking out and as we are seeing now. Anger and hate will never solve the problem but only adds to it. Tolerance is a virtue and should never be dismissed as only a weakness.  Franklin was a smart cookie for his time and knew the country would never have stayed the same in the future.

Yes, you did take up a lot of old English laws, but even thoughs have been up dated in Britain now.

Maybe some of your laws should be looked at closely and rewritten to reflect theses times. It seems like you have a lot of very good laws but for some reason many of them don't seemed to be getting followed. Some States seem to want more power that other States or their own Federal Government. Church and States must never be allowed to mix. This Roe vs Wade decision is an example of what discontent it can cause to the majority when it is. Major changes like that should be put to a proper vote so women are allowed their say in the matter. Now we have Cruz coming out and wanting the supreme court to ban same sex marriages because it's not comtained in the Constitution. He's just trying to deflect the peoples minds away from the real problems the country is facing. Immigration and gun laws should come before that because they concern all and not just a few. Both are problems that seem to be out of hand.

The politicians are supposed to make the laws through proposals called bills which they vote on. They are then signed into laws signed by the executive or vetoed. We have a republic, not a direct democracy like ancient Greece.

No, you have two parties that can't even agree on the time of day far less a change to a law.

I don't remember the last time I posted.  I am dealing with a problem at home and find it nearly impossible to concentrate on anything at the moment, but I'll be back when it gets resolved or somehow settled (that's a threat, not a promise).  Said problem involves my sister's health issues and the steps I've had to take to address them.  It began with a fall on 7 July.  All this in case you missed me.

Things like that come along all too frequently when we and those around us get older.

The family holiday today is still on, but in my opinion taking three over 80s out on the hottest day ever in GB is not a good idea. Back on Monday, if not before.

Meanwhile, it's never too late to turn back the clock of nature, not even 6,000 year's worth. For some baffling reason we have reintroduced Bison to Kent, 6,000 years after they threw in the towel. If only we had a Tyrannosaurus or two?

It was very hot yesterday and the silence was only broken by the numerous 'jobsworths' rubbing their hands with glee at the thought of all the rules, regulations, panic and fear they could instil. The fact that people actually listen to these Goebbelites never ceases to amaze me. Hello, hello, anyone at home McFly, it's just a hot day. I mean, early morning trains were cancelled, well before it reached its peak. My memory might be playing tricks on me in my old age but I can honestly remember when the sun shining hot was a cause for enjoying yourself. I mean, most of the time when it decides to make an appearance there is a spate of UFO sightings reported. King Loonpot 1st in waiting has quickly jumped on the bandwagon and cited it as positive proof we're all doomed. Pity Charleyboy didn't check up on the summer of 1911 first, a record that has yet to be matched. Then there's the much vaunted summer of 76, which I remember fondly. I used to cross the Pennines every Saturday, where there are many reservoirs. and watch them slowly disappear as the weeks went by. Standpipes in the streets etc but the kids never stayed off school and we bragged about the relentless sun. Mind you, there was a lot of WW2 generation around in those days and you don't flap that lot. Eventually the government appointed a minister of drought. I kid you not, they even fetched in a North American Indian to do a rain dance! Here's the best bit, it then rained so hard the country was flooded and so they changed his title from minister of drought to minister for floods. You can't make this stuff up. All together.... Mad dogs and Englishmen put on factor 500 and stay out of the sun.

Those temperatures were a bit naughty. Opening the back door was like opening the oven door. I had to get the dog out at 6 in the morning and kept spraying her with water for the rest of the day. Problem is the heat of the tarmac, it would burn her feet and considering Vets charge you £50 just to say hello to them, I thought I'd pass on the privilege.

It seems not only in your country but in most democracys now, you have you give up something to get something.

Sorry to hear about your sister Shula and we completely understand about your absence. Hope it's not too serious and she has a speedy recovery. Mine had a bad fall a month or so ago when one of her bad knees gave out and she ended up breaking her hip. Her age of 79 didn't help and she had been doing physiotherapy ever since after extensive surgery.
