1 January 1781 - The World's First Iron Bridge Opened.

In 1776 a proposal to construct a wholly metal bridge across the Severn Gorge between the Shropshire villages of Benthall and Madeley was put before Parliament. The necessary Act was passed with the the work for the design going to Thomas Pritchard and the actual casting and construction to Abraham Darby of the Coalbrookdale Ironworks, Shropshire.

Work began in 1777 and although the river was spanned as early as July 1779 the bridge was not formally opened to traffic until New Year's Day 1781. It is 100 ft long weighing 378 tons.

Such was the fame of the construction that the town that grew up around the two villages was renamed Ironbridge. Closed to road traffic in 1934 it remains in use for pedestrians.

The Sopwith Camel had been retired long before World War II, in 1920 I think. We flew Fairey Swordfish at Taranto.

Of course you are right. Silly me with another senior moment. The Swordfish was a biplane too which led to my confusion. It was also outdated.

c’mon Tom, you know quite well it wasn’t Edison. I think you’re looking for a wind up.

Nope, it was Joseph Swan. Swan took Edison to court in the USA for copying his invention and won. Edison then offered Swan a partnership which he accepted and the Edison Swan company was founded.

19 January 1736 - James Watt born.

Watt’s partner was John Roebuck, who lost his partnership to Matthew Boulton when he was unable to pay a debt to him. Boulton was a multitalented scientist who was responsible for many innovations. He was a member of the Royal Society the most prestigious scientific organisation in the country. He transformed the manufacturing of coinage in the country making it more sophisticated and harder to forge. His one penny piece lasted until the decimalisation of our money in the early 70s.

Controversy continues. He went to court in GB only where his patent was recognized. As the post says, Edison failed 1,000 times prior, but his was the most practical with a better filament which lasted longer.

I have to admit that scientific matters are largely a mystery to me, so the next post will stick to facts lifted from a book, others can provide clarity if they wish.

20 January 1775 - André Ampère born.

French physicist whose work at the École Polytechnique in Paris led to his publication on the relationship between electricity and magnetism in 1820. The SI unit of electrical current the amp is named after him.

22 January 1472 - The Great Comet of 1472.

On this date a comet passed closer to the Earth than any other in recorded history.

First sighted in December 1471 (hence its official modern designation of C/1471 Y1) it was visible for over eight weeks coming closest on this day 1472. Modern estimates are that it passed within 6½ million miles of Earth.
