21 July 1969 - The first man on the moon. 

What more can I say, mankind's greatest achievement.

Interestingly Lunar time is UTC which is the modern term for Greenwich Mean Time (British time). So the Eagle touched down at 2017hrs UTC 20 July and Neil Armstrong stepped out on to the Moon's surface at 0256hrs UTC 21 July. That however was UK time, in the USA it was still 20 July. A curious anomaly. 

22 July 1915 - Sir Sandford Fleming died.

Born in Scotland but emigrated to Canada aged 18 Fleming was the man who devised the 24 hour clock and the system of dividing the globe into time zones with the Prime Meridian running through Greenwich, London. His proposals were adopted in 1884.

He was also a designer and engineer, designing Canada's first postage stamp and engineering much of Canada's railroad system. Knighted in 1902.

For mankind, it was a giant leap; for us romantics, it was a trespass on sacred ground.  

That sacred ground is moving away from us at three inches a year, which means Neil's footprint is about 14 ft further away.

I'm doubtful about that. Problems down here will take up too much time and money to allow fanciful and needless colonization of the Moon. 

23 July 1903 - The first Ford motor car sold.

Henry Ford's first venture in to the motor car industry with the Detroit Automobile Company in 1899 ended with the company's collapse just two years later. Reorganized as refunded as the Henry Ford Company later that year it too collapsed without producing any vehicles in 1902. Undeterred Ford pressed on founding the Ford Company in 1903 again in Detroit. It proved a great and enduring success. 

Its first vehicle, sold on 23 July 1903, was a Ford Model A bought by a Chicago dentist.

Couldn't wait to get my driver's license at age 16. My first car cost $40. 

24 July 1950 - The first rocket launched from Cape Canaveral.

The most famous space launch site in the world began life as Cape Canaveral Launch Area in 1949. In the summer of 1950 the launch site of the RTV-G-4 Bumper rocket was transferred from White Sands Missile Range NM to CCLA where on 24 July Bumper 8 was launched reaching an altitude of ten miles and a distance of 160 miles before falling in to the sea. 

Cape Canaveral has undergone a number of name changes over the years and is known today as Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.  

They might land there again, but I can't see any kind of Moon city being established, too fanciful. 

There will be moon bases, Marcus Skepticus.  Watch for headlines or check out NASA's website.  The moon is going to be the launchpad for going to Mars.
