1 January 1136 - The Battle of Llwchwr.

The Norman invasion of Wales following their conquest of England was a much more prolonged process taking 30 years before the Welsh Princes accepted the Norman King of England as Overlord whilst retaining a measure of local independence. Nevertheless Norman control was patchy with the Welsh taking every opportunity to rebel against the Norman-English.

One such opportunity came with the death of Henry I in December 1135 and the disputed succession. With the English distracted the Welsh under the Lord of Brycheiniog, Hywel ap Maredudd set about raiding Norman settlements in south Wales. The Normans sent a small army to tackle what they expected to be a band of lawless raiders. The two forces met at Llwchwr west of Swansea.

Details are scarce, even the name of the Norman commander is unknown, but the Welsh were victorious killing around 500 Normans. The victory emboldened the Welsh into further rebellion which paused Norman expansion into Wales for 30 years.

A stone marks the battlefield today.

23 November 1837 - The Battle of Saint-Denis, Papineau's Rebellion.

A rebellion by French speakers in the British colony of Lower Canada named after one of its leaders Louis-Joseph Papineau.

After failing to gain constitutional and financial reform for French-Canadians an armed organization, the Society of the Sons of Liberty, was founded in August 1837. The failed arrest of the leaders in November encouraged members into open conflict. 800 rebels took over and fortified the village of Saint-Denis where on 23 November 300 men led by Col. Charles Gore attempted to storm the rebels' headquarters. They were held off and forced to retreat for the loss of six killed.

It was the rebels' only victory, two days later they were routed at Saint-Charles and the rebellion collapsed.

Today they claim victory in the form of dual language road signs.

August 2, 1945 Just 4 days before Hiroshima disappeared in a mushroom cloud, 855 American B-29's obliterated 6 Jap cities in one single massive operation. Dropping tons of jellied gasoline & magnesium in a horrific display of conventional war destruction.

And they didn’t surrender, neither following Hiroshima. It would take another city in quick succession before they came to the table, so what does that tell the sanctimonious? The the second atomic attack came so quickly how did the Japs not know the Yanks had a dozen more waiting. When you read about what the Japs did, never, ever showing an ounce of pity to anybody, it’s hard to raise any sympathy
