1 January 1136 - The Battle of Llwchwr.

The Norman invasion of Wales following their conquest of England was a much more prolonged process taking 30 years before the Welsh Princes accepted the Norman King of England as Overlord whilst retaining a measure of local independence. Nevertheless Norman control was patchy with the Welsh taking every opportunity to rebel against the Norman-English.

One such opportunity came with the death of Henry I in December 1135 and the disputed succession. With the English distracted the Welsh under the Lord of Brycheiniog, Hywel ap Maredudd set about raiding Norman settlements in south Wales. The Normans sent a small army to tackle what they expected to be a band of lawless raiders. The two forces met at Llwchwr west of Swansea.

Details are scarce, even the name of the Norman commander is unknown, but the Welsh were victorious killing around 500 Normans. The victory emboldened the Welsh into further rebellion which paused Norman expansion into Wales for 30 years.

A stone marks the battlefield today.

1253 The sneaky Norse were invading Scotland & a barefoot Viking stepped on a thistle. When he cried out in pain it alerted a Scottish sentry & prepared them for the sneak attack. The thistle is the official Scottish flower & was imprinted on coins some 200 years later. Fact, Fiction, Myth? Please advise.

Merely a myth it would seem. The thistle didn't appear on Scottish coins until 1470. Also there were no Viking attacks on Scotland in the 1250s.

28 February 1900 - The Siege of Ladysmith lifted.

The second of the three British garrisons to be saved from the Boers.

Ladysmith was placed under siege by the Boers in November 1899, the garrison of 12,500 under Gen. Sir George White held out for 118 days under a sporadic bombardment. A Boer attempt to take the town by storm in early January failed. Eventually after a number of false starts and reverses on the way a relief column arrived on 28 February, among them a 25 year old Winston Churchill, driving off the Boers.

29 February 1884 - The second Battle of El Teb.

For the first battle see 4 February. After the Anglo-Egyptian defeat at El Teb reinforcements were sent to Suakin, these comprised troops from Egypt, Aden and the Royal Irish Fusiliers diverted on their way home from India.

As before the army boarded ships and sailed down the coast to Trinkitat from whence on 21 February led by Gen. Gerald Graham accompanied by Col. Baker 4500 British and Indian soldiers headed inland for El Teb.

This time they were victorious against 10,000 Dervishes. suffering just 30 killed to the Mahdists 2000. The force moved on to retake both Tokar and Sinkat. Col. Baker had gained his revenge.

1326 Queen Isabella of France invades England ruled by King Edward II who is her husband. She conquers England with only 1500 mercenaries as an army. Edward's 14-year-old son is appointed ruler at age 14 with Queen Isabella acting as Regent. Not sure if Isabella is his mum or not. Edward II forced into exile where he dies shortly after under mysterious circumstances. Confusing, eh???

The deposed Edward II wasn't in exile, he was imprisoned in a castle in England and murdered eight months later. Queen Isabella and her lover the Earl of March ruled England in the name of her son and gave out that the deposed King had died of natural causes. They ruled until the young Edward III was almost 18 when he struck overthrowing the Regency and having Lord March beheaded, his mother was sent to a convent for a while.

There's no real doubt over Edward III's parentage, his mother didn't take Lord March as her lover until the early 1320s ten years after her son Edward was born.

Isabella was undoubtedly Edward III's mother, the suggestion is that Roger Mortimer, Earl of March was his father. But their relationship didn't begin until around 1325, Edward was born in 1312.

1 March 1896 - The Battle of Adowa.

One of the largest defeats suffered by a European power in a colonial war.

Italy only became a united country in 1861 thus it was a late arrival in the scramble for empire. By the 1880s almost nothing was left unclaimed, so Italy turned its attention to Abyssinia in north east Africa.

It began with a coastal strip on the Red Sea (modern Eritrea) which denied the empire of Abyssinia access to the sea. With eyes on Abyssinia itself Italy invaded in 1895. After initial success the Italians were defeated in December and withdrew to a more defensive position. Just a few days before the Governor Baratieri was about to be replaced he ordered an advance on the Abyssinians at Adowa to try to score a victory before he left office.

Around 17,000 Italians clashed with up to 100,000 Abyssinians and were overwhelmed in a six hour battle. About 6000 were killed, including two Generals and nearly 4000 captured, including another General, the Abyssinians lost a similar number dead.

The Italians withdrew to Eritrea and accepted Abyssinian independence. It would be nearly 40 years before Italy would take on Abyssinia again.

Poor odds for the Iti's. Should be 3 to 1 in favor of the attackers.

2 March 1331 - The Fall of Nicaea.

By the 1320s the once great Byzantine Empire which had covered much of the Mediterranean and Asia Minor had been reduced to the north west portion of Anatolia with the capital Constantinople and territory on the European side in the Balkans. Land had been lost to both Christian invaders from the west but far more to the Ottoman Turks coming in from the east.

The last important border city holding out against the Turks was Nicaea just 60 miles from Constantinople. It had been placed under blockade and intermittent siege since 1328 because, although not on the coast, it had quick access to the sea of Marmara and could be supplied from Constantinople.

Eventually Nicaea could hold out no longer and surrendered in March 1331 after a three year siege. The city was proclaimed capital of the expanding Ottoman Empire, but its ruinous state and much reduced population led to the capital being moved to Bursa just four years later.

3-4 March 1776 - The American attack on Nassau.

In February 1776 an American fleet of eight ships sailed into the Atlantic with the aim of disrupting British trade. Aware that he could not take on the much larger Royal Navy ships Commodore Hopkins headed for the Bahamas where he planned to seize the gunpowder store at Nassau.

Nassau was poorly defended, 42 men to man the guns and the port protected by mere sloops not sizeable warships. The Americans arrived on 2 March and stayed out of range of the British guns. The following day Hopkins landed 284 men nine miles east of Nassau and moved on the town. First they captured Fort Montagu after the handful of defenders fled before approaching Nassau. Gov. Browne hopelessly outnumbered surrendered immediately, not a shot had been fired.

The amount of gunpowder seized was not as large as Hopkins expected, Gov. Browne had taken the precaution of sending most of it away the night before in a sloop to St Augustine in Florida, then a British colony. The Americans remained in Nassau until 17 March before returning home with Gov. Browne a prisoner.

One of the complaints is that Zelenskyy did not dress properly while gaining an audience with his "Nibbs" at the White House. Apparently Starmer & the King didn't care about his apparel, eh? Zelenskyy always dresses like that.

Europe realizes it cannot take the place of the U.S. in peace talks. Ukraine needs American satellite information, financial support, & equipment to last another 6 months. Karmer has the task to get Trump & Zelenskyy back to the table. Not an enviable job. The U.S. does not seem like a reliable partner.............AGAIN!

4 March 1238 - The Battle of Sit River.

By the early 1230s the Mongol hordes were rapidly heading east across what is now Russia destroying everyone and everything in their path. One of the fragmented Principalities that stood in their way was Vladimir-Suzdal north east of modern Moscow.

In February 1238 the Mongols sacked the capital Vladimir, Grand Prince Yuri II escaped and rallied his army to take on the invaders. His 3000 mostly infantry clashed with 10,000 mostly Mongol cavalry on the Sit river a month later. The Russians were defeated and Prince Yuri killed.

The battle marked the virtual end of Russian resistance against the Mongols who swept on reaching eastern Europe in 1240 and penetrating as far west as Hungary by 1242 before retreating upon news of the death of the Great Khan back in Mongolia.

5 March 1295 - The Battle of Maes Moydog.

Wales fell under English control after the death in battle of the last Prince of an independent Wales in 1282. Needless to say the Welsh didn't immediately accept English rule which led to a number of uprisings over the following years.

One of these erupted in 1294 when Madog ap Llywelyn, a distant relative of the last Prince of Wales, proclaimed himself Prince. He planned the rebellion to coincide with King Edward's departure to France with an army, but bad weather forced Edward to postpone his sailing and upon hearing of the Welsh uprising he diverted his men to north Wales.

Madog had early success in trapping King Edward in Conway Castle until he was rescued by sea. The decisive battle came in March when the English under the Earl of Warwick surprised the Welsh led by Madog. The Welsh had time to form into a defensive position, but the English archers devastated their ranks with around 700 killed including many who drowned trying to escape across the river Vyrnwy.

Madog himself got away but was captured in July and imprisoned in the Tower of London where he remained for the rest of his life.
