19 December 1851 - Joseph Mallord William Turner died.

J M W Turner the great English landscape artist exhibiting his first piece at the Royal Academy when he was just 15. His travels in Europe and the thousands of sketches he brought back allowed him to create many and varied works with the sea being an especial favourite. Increasingly reclusive in old age he left hundreds of works to the nation upon his death aged 76.

20 December 1999 - Clarence Eugene "Hank" Snow died.

I suppose this counts as The Arts. A Country and Western singer apparently, I know nothing about him, he's only here because Tom has mentioned him before and I can't find anything better.

It's the anniversary of John Steinbeck's death in 1968, but I covered him on his birthday in February and I don't do the same person twice, so Hank Snow gets the nod.

Hank Snow, "The singing Ranger" from Canada. Had many country hits back in the day. Wore "Nudie" suits & was quite a showman.

December 19, 1947 Now that you are including country artists, you missed the birthday of Janie Fricke, Mark. Country singer-songwriter whose hit song, "It ain't easy being easy" is one of my favorites.

I'm sure most would agree that J M W Turner takes precedence over some C&W singer we've never heard of.

Yes, some reclusive guy who painted trees, bushes, water, & was a bit odd. That goes with being an "artist," eh? Like the great country singer Del Reeves said in a song............."I guess I've arrived, this must be the bottom."
