Captain Matthew Webb was the first person recorded as swimming the English Channel without the use of artificial aids. He performed many stunts for $ & became quite famous world-wide. Then on July 24, 1883 he came to the mighty Niagara River in an attempt to swim whirlpool rapids, a feat everyone said could not be done. He drowned in his attempt. The good captain is buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Niagara Falls near Annie Edson Taylor who was the first person to successfully go over Niagara Falls in a barrel.

There used to be a brand of matches here with his figure on it, a bold looking Victorian gent with his arms folded and long moustache. Captain Web matches, lit a few ciggies in my time with them.

He was born in 1848 in Dawley, Telford, UK so that would put him in the Victorian time period. I hope he got some royalty $ for his image on the matches.

When I first looked at this image I thought Niagara Falls in the background. Upon further review it is the Cliffs of Dover which makes sense. Quite a stern looking fellow.

Born in the next County to me, inland Shropshire, he learnt to swim in the river Severn.

That's a different picture of him than the one I remember on the matchbox. The one I recall had him in a side profile with his arms folded

A box of matches are only so big Art. If you want his arms in the picture you would have to buy bigger matches. Maybe the size you would use to start a fireplace with, not the size to light a pipe, cigarettes or a cigar with.

Can just see you cratching your head thinking about it. Ha

A box of matches are only so big Art. If you want his arms in the picture you would have to buy bigger matches. Maybe the size you would use to start a fireplace with, not the size to light a pipe, cigarettes or a cigar with.

Can just see you cratching your head thinking about it. Ha

I can see his folded arms where it says first channel swimmer and if you had any imagination you could join us.
