As an apprentice I had a shocking education because I was On site at 17 and they had a bonus system running. The foreman plumber was supposed to be giving me an apprenticeship but he was obsessed with money and I just happened to be ultra quick on gutters, downspouts and lead slates, which he kept me on constantly, I never got to fit a bathroom, or boiler and by the time they thought to shift me back to routine plumbing on housing, I knew very little really and I was 19. I used to attend building college one day a week but the place was hopelessly dated when I think about it now and so I got to learn plumbing from a bygone age, which was interesting but no use whatsoever in the real world, unless you went into preservation. I dumped the company as soon I legally could and that’s when I packed up went to the island of Jersey.

It does sound like a myth, but I've not checked.
